Urban Planning and Local Wisdom
A Study of Urban Culture

A large number of population increase made a local wisdom, which is the physical aspects of nature, including the vulnerability to natural disasters, environment capacity and supporting capability, and socio-cultural dimension in managing the housing space is almost neglected in the consideration of urban development. It spared the the attention of government and citizens. Those aspects are less of priority in the urban planning discourse, whereas the local wisdom should always be included in.

Along with the bad side, urban challenges always develop, starting from the urbanization, citizens' basic needs which is always increase, slums, limited transportation and infrastructure, unfinished poverty problem, socio-cultural issues, to environmental degradation that did not move.

As well as economic opportunities that must be taken, a moment political interests, and globalization have made the local wisdom aspects -especially socio-cultural- increasingly neglected. In turn, the community will reap a huge losses due to it all.

Urban planning has a key role, both in terms of planning and implementation quality. A qualified urban planning has strategic, inclusive, consensus, participative, and comprehensive included in accommodate a diversity existence, creativity, innovation and formality of urban life.

The Urban Research Plaza (URP) is a research center created by Osaka City University, Japan who wants to develop it into worldwide urban research center. The are actively doing research, seminar, and community empowerment activities that can be applied in real life. Besides Osaka, URP has also worked with Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, University of Shanghai in China, The University of London in England, and The University of Hamburg in Germany.

The URP Yogyakarta Sub-center is a part of URP collaborated with Faculty of Cultural Science UGM and Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. Related to those things, URP Yogyakarta Sub-center invites parties who have competencies in urban cultural issues to share their ideas and experiences, to find solutions of the urban planning challenges based on local culture in a seminar room, limited to these main point of ideas:


    * to find innovative solutions across division and competency of urban planning in harmony with the local wisdom.
    * to find a synergy area between the components: society, academics workers, government, and other sectors in the from of integrated solutions.
    * to try ideas of community development which is creative, synergy, inclusive.


Deden Rukmana is an assistant professor and coordinator of a graduate program in urban studies and planning at Savannah State University, Georgina, US. He received his PhD in Urban and Regional Planning (Florida State University). His Master Degree (MT) received from Bandung Institute of Technology in Development Studies and University of Southern California in Planning and Development Studies (MPDS).

Before joining Savannah State University, he worked as planning analyst with Communities Planning Division from Florida Department of Community Affairs at Tallahassee, Florida. Before, he worked for Ciamis District Government at Urban Planning Service (1994-1999).

His primary research interests include homelessness, poverty, housing and community development, international planning and development, urbanization, and historical preservation. He is the author of “Residential Origin Homeless” (VDM Verlag, March 2008). He also published articles in various refereed journals including Journal of Planning Education and Research, Children and Youth Service Review, International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability, International Journal of Diversity in Organization, Communities and Nation and Critical Planning.

Gabriel Roosmargono Lono Lastoro Simatupang All his studies in Anthropology focused on study of arts. As anthropologist who specializes ethnomusicology, he is also working as lecturer and the chairman of Anthropology Department, faculty of Cultural Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada. He graduated from Monash University (MA and The University of Sydney (PhD).

Some of his writings that have been published are Strategi Kebudayaan dan Kebudayaan sebagai Strategi (MSPI Journal, 2000), Play and Display: An Ethnographic Study of Reyog Ponorogo, East Java (the University of Sydney, 2002), and Tato dalam Wacana Kebutuhan (Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2003).
